I have searched fruitlessly all over the place for hours trying to figure out how to use the latest version of the AjaxControlToolkit without any luck. There are a lot of conflicting answers out there. 

Can anybody provide a definitive answer about if and how to use AJAXCONTROLTOOLKIT? Telerik is too expensive for most stuff we need and I have already gone around updating System.web.extensions in Web.config to version 4.0 but I am getting error:

AjaxControlToolkit requires ASP.NET Ajax 4.0 scripts. Ensure the correct version of the scripts are referenced. If you are using an ASP.NET ScriptManager, switch to the ToolkitScriptManager in AjaxControlToolkit.dll.
