Hi all,
I am trying to understand how content localization works. I downloaded the Super Users manual and have read that.
My questions center around, the 20ish pages in the manual (1480-1500) regarding content localization. The manual has a section for each of the following “tasks”:
“Adding a module to all languages”
“Adding a new Page (default language)”
“Adding modules to Secondary Language pages”
“Delete modules from Secondary Language”
“Edit (Translate) Localized Module Content”
“Edit the Content of Shared Modules”
“Modifying Module Localization Status”
“Publishing a Secondary Language Page”
“Setting a Page as Ready for Translation”
“Setting a Page as Requiring Translation”
“Setting a Page as Translated”
“Translating a Page”
“Viewing site in Secondary Language”
“Viewing site in Default Language”
All of these individual tasks are detailed fairly clearly, but my issue is that there seems to be no explanation about what / why I would choose to do any of those tasks.
My scenario is that I have a website (DNN V7.02) which until now has been an English only website. Now I am required to make it into also support Chinese. I understand that there is a difference between changing the static text of various modules and changing the text/content of modules. I also understand that I have to install a language pack (or make my own) to handle the static parts….like field labels etc. I have downloaded the language pack from the DNN site, and installed it…..seemed to go fine.
So, what do I do next? Do I set a page as being ready for translation? Or do I add a module to a secondary language? Or do I Translate a page? Or do I modify a module’s localization status? I have no idea what the “process” looks like or how the tasks detailed fit into the larger picture of DNN.
Right now, the manual is a bit analogous to me handing you a box of really cool parts, with complete technical specs on each part, but no explanation about how the parts go together to make something. What is the likelyhood that you will build the Eiffel tower from those parts? Not great I would think.
So what I am looking for is an overview (video or text or whatever) explaining what the process is, what the key concepts are, and what a typical workflow looks like to make a DNN website function in multiple languages. I know there is no single perfect answer and there are pros/cons to different approaches, but some guidance is necessary to make sense of the “steps” listed in the user manual and hopefully allow me to build my Eiffel tower.
Thanks in advance for any guidance and/or resources etc that you can provide.
