New team just setting up?  Needs time to learn the communication channels?

It appears that the map blog for the team lead was set up in March of 2006, and I can see two postings there, April and December of 2006.   This particular thread has been unanswered for 6 1/2 weeks.

I respectfully submit to you that anyone clever enough to code a map module is clever enough to puzzle out how to post a "almost done, maybe another month at most " or "no progress, really swamped at work, will update you next month" status message once a month over the course of a year.  That's all it would take.

We all truly appreciate the good work they are doing.  But we are customers, and we are telling you what we, as customers need.   I for one would prefer getting the module one week later if it meant I had been given a brief status report once a month.  Why?  Because if I knew when to expect it, I could plan time to take advantage of it.  Not knowing means I have to start making plans to free up time once it shows up, which might equate to way more than the 1 calendar week consumed making the status reports.  It enables me to help my customers plan.  Incidentally, the sample status reports above would have consumed 12 times 2 minutes, or 24 minutes of project time, at most, and that includes the time to fire up the browser, log in, type in one simple sentence, and press update - and would have avoided bad PR.

One of the core team posted a response to this same question in the benefactor's forum.

The team lead believes they are "inches away" from being done, which would release it to QA.

So, assuming this isn't wishful thinking - none of us have ever done that on a project before :) - it appears progress is being made.

Kevin Schreiner is team lead for the Map Project and is working hard to get the module ready for release. Please take into account, that this is a volunteer project and we all have regular jobs "aside" of our DNN engagement, many are self-employed and need to priviledge paid jobs - this makes it difficult to name strict timelines; e.g. I planned to complete next version of UDT a couple of weeks ago and are still working on the new search feature. I regard us as part of a community, where we are working to improve a great product. If you regard yourself as customer, you get more, than you pay for ;-)

From various posts here and there, it appears that there are semi-regular meetings (I'm assuming conference call or chat sessions) to discuss progress on all the different projects.

Now, we all know it's hard to find good programmers.  It's harder to find good programmers that will make the time to do volunteer work like DNN.  It's even harder to find good programmers that will do volunteer work who also feel comfortable doing public writing.  And, no surprisingly, darn near impossible to find one who can do all that and will also make the time to write up what they are doing.

In some ways, it's a miracle we are where we are!  (And a hard-earned miracle at that!)

Perhaps the core team needs to add a "Status Report Secretary" to the team.  Their job would be to listen in on the calls and write up and publish a progress report for those project leads who cannot make time to write their own.

If a volunteer or two can be found to do it, it would go a long way to improve communication with the user base.

One point that the community makes repeatedly is that they don't mind bad news, they fully understand the real life pressures the volunteers are under, they just need regular news in order to plan.   This might be an easy way to meet that need.
