I followed the instructions as per the installation document but when I browse to the Virtual Directory to proceed with the installation: http://localhost/StaffPortal/Dotnetnuke/Install/Install.aspx?mode=Install, I encountered the following error:

DotNetNuke Configuration Error

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

DotNetNuke has extensive file upload capabilities for content, modules, and skins. These features require custom security settings so that the application is able to create and remove files in your website.

Using Windows Explorer, browse to the root folder of the website ( C:\DotNetNuke by default ). Right-click the folder and select Sharing and Security from the popup menu ( please note that if you are using Windows XP you may need to Enable Simple File Sharing before these options are displayed ). Select the Security tab. Add the appropriate User Account and set the Permissions.

If using Windows 2000 - IIS5
- the {Server}\ASPNET User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

If using Windows 2003 - IIS6
- the NT AUTHORITY\NETWORK SERVICE User Account must have Read, Write, and Change Control of the virtual root of your website

I am using IIS5 and I have ensured that ASPNET user account has FULL CONTROL ACCESS to the virtual root of my website. The above error still occur. Please advise what I have done incorrectly....

I'm trying to understand your setup. It appears that your dotnetnuke virtual directory is set to the dotnetnuke folder and that is the one where your permissions must be set although permissions should flow to subdirectories if you set it on the StaffPortal directory.

You should be able to just browse to your virtual directory instead of using the full path to the install.aspx file (as a matter of fact if dotnetnuke is your virtual directory - you should be using localhost/dotnetnuke anyway without the StaffPortals in the address line). What happens when you do this? It's still unclear where your virtual directory is. Do you browse to the site with "dotnetnuke" (localhost/dotnetnuke) or "StaffPortals" (localhost/StaffPortals)?
