FWIW in this modern day and age - there is very little that you can do on your OWN site beyond the normal seo metadata like keywords and descriptions etc that makes a whole lot of difference in terms of page ranks.

The MOST important thing you can actually do to improve your own site rank is for it to be mentioned more often on OTHER sites. Get visible of facebook and g+ and start writing blogs etc. Get yourself listed on all the popular lists and engines etc - ultimately all that sort of stuff is what really drives up true rankings - that being your public visibility

alexa is not regarded as a real, valid test as it's so easy to spoof. Alexa works by having a toolbar on users computers and recording where they go - this is (obviously) a very small percentage of real internet users, so is easy to "game" e.g. if you have a company with 100 people, ensure they all run the alexa toolbar and ask them to visit a website once a day every day for a week and your alexa ranking will jump massively. I once worked in a company where we visited a customers current site a number of times to get content for a redesign, and their alexa rank jumped by hundreds of thousdans, even though it was only 2 engineers and 1 designed. As Wes says, the best way to get a high ranking is to have a site with good content, that user's will then link to, and get your site noticed as somewhere of influence. There are ways to fake this (known as "blackhat" SEO), such as creating many fake sites with links to your real site, but this is gaming the system and if a search engine finds out you will be banned and potentially delisted - also search engines such as google are intelligent enough to detect many of these automated attacks.
