check the number of entries in eventlog and schedule history, both should not exceed a few hundred records. If necessary, go to Host > SQL and perform
TRUNCATE TABLE {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}eventlog
TRUNCATE TABLE {databaseOwner}{objectQualifier}schedulehistory

Besides check table SearchItemWordPosition for duplicate entries, if necessary, clear the tables (http://www.deutschnetnuke.de/tabid/13...) and re-index your site (in Host > Search)

Thanks for your help as always Sebastian, unfortunately I've performed those tasks and have the same issue:

Connection Timeout Expired. The timeout period elapsed during the post-login phase. The connection could have timed out while waiting for server to complete the login process and respond; Or it could have timed out while attempting to create multiple active connections. The duration spent while attempting to connect to this server was - [Pre-Login] initialization=0; handshake=1; [Login] initialization=0; authentication=0; [Post-Login] complete=14000;

 Are there any other avenues I can look at to try and resolve this issue?

OK, no luck finding the cause of this issue but I have 2 sites running 7.0.4 on the same server environment and the logs are red with this error. I keep finding my site in the unavailable state.

I have also installed in the last few days a version on 7.0.6 and the logs are clean so far so based on that I have upgraded our site7.0.4 > 7.0.6 (without a hitch by the way, actual upgrade run took 33 seconds to complete.) so I will continue to monitor the sites to see if it resolves the error.

Incidentally the server environment these sites are on requires me to add the extra connection string entry into the web.config for localSqlServer, a problem a few people were experiencing on v7+ of dnn http://www.dotnetnuke.com/Resources/Forums/forumid/107/threadid/473361/scope/posts.aspx

I'm not sure if this was ever resolved or if it has any relevance to my sql provider errors i'm getting but though it was worth mentioning.

I'll report back my findings but in the meantime if anyone can offer any other advice I would be most grateful!
