Is there a way to add custom fields to the userprofile? Like bit, nvarchar, int, float, double,.. and even GUID that references a record in another (custom) table? And is it then possible to add these fields to the userregistration form (using a dropdownlist for the foreignkey GUIDs) and flagging some of this fields as mandatory? And of course showing these additional fields in the "edit userprofile" form too?

No.

The user profile only has a string to store the properties (you can add profile properties in Site Settings :: User Account Settings :: Profile Settings).

But even if you choose Date or Integer or Checkbox or whatever as the data type, the actual value will be stored as a string, only the interface validates a correct value.

Even worse: If you add a date (say DOB) and have a multilingual portal, say English and German, most of the dates will return invalid or wrong values when the language is switched. Why? Because today is 8/13/2012 - or 12.8.2012 in German...

Best wishes
Michael

Thanks for your reply.

That really sounds discouraging... Okay, I've bought a module called "Dynamic Registration 4.2". As far as I understand it, it uses its own table to "extend" the core user datatable with additional custom fields (of hopefully "real" SQL datatypes of different formats) and it offers a custom registration form to enter these values.

I'll give it a try and I'm curious if it also offers a way to extend the "edit userprofile" form and how this all plays together with the new socialgroups and journal and userdirectory stuff... Will report back what I've learned.
