We had a major failure which destroyed both our primary web server and latest backups. I have the DNN DBs. Can I recreate the sites?

I have had some success recreating 4 sites that were lost by looking at the version table in each db, installing the correct version of DNN and configuring the connection strings, installing the skin (listed in portalsettings table) on a different site and copying the correct skin and container directories to the new site. The structure of the site is there (e.g. www.nemdstem.org), but the content is missing and I cannot login. I assume I have an authentication issue, but I'm not sure how to approach this problem.

Any thoughts would be most appreciated.

You will have an authentication issue unless you have the machinekey values from the original web.config file. Unfortunately without those you won't be able to authenticate in DNN without going through and making DB level changes to the user's password storage in the ASPNET tables in the database.

I was able to recover the machinekeys for the sites that I was trying to rebuild. Adding the machinekey to the web.config did not fix the problem I have with the content not being displayed. However I am now able to login where I can see that there are errors in each htmltext module. This is the error I am seeing:

Error: Welcome to Mantua Democrats! is currently unavailable.
DotNetNuke.Services.Exceptions.ModuleLoadException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlModule'. ---> System.Web.HttpParseException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlModule'. ---> System.Web.HttpParseException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlModule'. ---> System.Web.HttpException: Could not load type 'DotNetNuke.Modules.Html.HtmlModule'. at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.GetType(String typeName, Boolean ignoreCase, Boolean throw ) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ProcessInheritsAttribute(String baseTypeName, String codeFileBaseTypeName, String src, Assembly assembly) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.PostProcessMainDirectiveAttributes(IDictionary parseData) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ProcessException(Exception ex) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseStringInternal(String text, Encoding fileEncoding) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseString(String text, VirtualPath virtualPath, Encoding fileEncoding) --- End of inner exception stack trace --- at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseString(String text, VirtualPath virtualPath, Encoding fileEncoding) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseReader(StreamReader reader, VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseFile(String physicalPath, VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.ParseInternal() at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.Parse() at System.Web.UI.TemplateParser.Parse(ICollection referencedAssemblies, VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.Compilation.BaseTemplateBuildProvider.get_CodeCompilerType() at System.Web.Compilation.BuildProvider.GetCompilerTypeFromBuildProvider(BuildProvider buildProvider) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildProvidersCompiler.ProcessBuildProviders() at System.Web.Compilation.BuildProvidersCompiler.PerformBuild() at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.CompileWebFile(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultInternal(VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResultWithNoAssert(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.Compilation.BuildManager.GetVPathBuildResult(HttpContext context, VirtualPath virtualPath, Boolean noBuild, Boolean allowCrossApp, Boolean allowBuildInPrecompile) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(VirtualPath virtualPath) at System.Web.UI.TemplateControl.LoadControl(String virtualPath) at DotNetNuke.UI.ControlUtilities.LoadControl[T](TemplateControl containerControl, String ControlSrc) at DotNetNuke.UI.Modules.ModuleHost.LoadModuleControl() --- End of inner exception stack trace ---

This almost looks like the wrong version of the module is trying to be loaded, but I have the correct dnn version installed as far as I can tell. Does anyone have any thoughts on this error?
