I have a fairly large product database that I'd like to import, rather than manually enter.  What are your thoughts on bulk uploading an existing categories heirarchy and products directly into the DB vs the manual method?

I import over 3,000 SKUs and 20 Categories from an Excel spreadsheet (about 500 KB) in about 5 seconds.

What did you use to do that?  Did you write your own script?

Yes, using vb.net, oledb and sql client. It could easily be dropped into a DotNetNuke module. I am working on IPortable for the Store as well.
