Last night, at around 22:00 GMT, we experienced a number of application shutdowns on our production portal. The shutdowns according to the event logs (see below) are all attributed to changes in the hosting environment - changes to the Bin, App_Code, App_Browsers, App_GlobalResources folders, the Global.asax file or because of the hosting environment.

  • There were no admin or host users logged in at the time and only our operations staff have access to these folders and none of them were logged in or working at this time.

We have checked each of the folders - none of them have any files updated at the times shown in the logs, nor have any files been deleted.

We have checked scheduled back-ups but they all completed successfully at least 15 minutes before we experienced these problems.

We have checked the anti-virus software, but don't believe that this has touched these folders.

The only scheduled jobs that are active on this portal are:

  • DotNetNuke.Entities.Users.PurgeUsersOnline, DOTNETNUKE

    DotNetNuke.Services.Log.SiteLog.PurgeSiteLog, DOTNETNUKE

    DotNetNuke.Services.Scheduling.PurgeScheduleHistory, DOTNETNUKE

    DotNetNuke.Services.Log.EventLog.PurgeLogBuffer, DOTNETNUKE

    DotNetNuke.Services.Cache.PurgeCache, DOTNETNUKE

    DotNetNuke.Modules.Events.EventNotification, DotNetNuke.Modules.Events

I don't think any of these could affect these folders could they?

FYI, Our set-up comprises of two web servers pointing at a single file server

We also saw a number of shutdowns very similar to these last week albeit at a much earlier time (approx 18:30 rather than 22:00).

Can you give us any other suggestions as to how these folders could have been updated and hence the shutdowns could have happened?

Could there be something else causing these shutdown's, possibly even generating these event logs, that we haven't considered?

Any help you could provide would be most appreciated.

These "Shutdowns" are caused by your application pool recycling either because of time or memory usage. You can adjust the recycling of your AppPools in your IIS control MMC.

Thanks Chris, I will check the IIS logs for the App_Pool.

However this doesn't explain the entires in the event log saying that folders have been updated when we know that they clearly haven't?

Anyone got any suggestions as to why we are seeing these entries in the eventlog & hence the application shutdowns?

files might be modified by a backup service (changing archive flag) or being blocked by an AV tool as well.
