There are a lot of advantages to virtual servers for the mainstream IT world, and even hosting companies.  For DNN, a virtual server is no different than a standard server.  The ability to put a dozen servers in the rack space of one, with the power consumption of one and the server hardware of one is a great benefit.  You can also back up and restore virtual servers for disaster recovery very easily.  Follow the guidelines for hardware choice for any virtual servers you do.

Ah good point - agreed - disaster recovery is definitely a very good point and you definitely get some flexibility with VM's... but all at a cost/performance/flexibility tradeoff. I guess it just really depends on what the scalability or distribution strategy is.

Hi Alex, everyone

Thanks for this(and all the other responses!) I am a fellow Englishman, in Portishead near Bristol! Having read all of your comments, i think we will take a 'Suck it and see' approach to the hosting. We'll start with virtual servers and if the application struggles, we'll upscale!

I'll contact the corporation seperately as suggested.

Thanks all.
