Hello,

My current client is a large police force in the UK and I am in the process of setting up a new intranet for them using DotNetNuke. I have a couple of questions around the system requirements as they have asked me what hardware the system needs.

The force intranet needs to support 6500+ users on a daily basis, stretched across a large geographical area via LAN. With this in mind, I would like to know the following please:
  1. What are the recommended server system requirements to provide the solution outlined above. Can you supply this for the web server and the SQL database server?
  2. I have been asked if the system could run on Microsoft Virtual Servers and if this is recommended. Would this be supportable?
They are likely to want to take up a support contract with the DotNetNuke Corporation as the project will be a key resource for them. Can you provide a quote for supporting both of the above configurations?

Thanks in advance.

Hi Avsompol

Finally a fellow Englishman (Londoner?)..!

What would be your theoretical maximum number of users?

What sort of DNN applications would you be running? Would you be running a large number of them (i.e. call logging systems etc).

How often would it be used (i.e. is it just a public noticeboard or are you expecting to intigrate existing systems through this in the long term?)

Sounds to me straight away you at least need a seperate web server and database server (the more power the better), perhaps they need to be clustered with other servers if it's a critical service, sounds to me that scalability is very important?

The other thing to consider is whether you have a web farm scenario or not, and how many portals you will be running?

You should contact the DNN corp directly anyway at:

in regards to your contract.

Forget DNN is in the mix.  What server would be spec'd for a web server?  A SQL server?  That's all you need.  As for your second question, yes it can and it is supportable.  Again, not a DNN issue, just SQL Server and Windows Server.

Oh and nb I'm not sure if Virtual Servers would be the best way to go? why would you want to run this if you are just pumping info through a web browser? Seems to me a dedicated server for your web/databases services would be the way to go.

Maybe someone could correct me if I've got the wrong end of the stick here.

Thanks...

That last comment I sent at the same time as you...

Well anyway, I think this is a difficult one to answer, as performance and capacity is entirely dependent on the characteristics of the web application, what it does, number of concurrent users etc. It's a difficult one to call with a vague specification.

You would probably need to profile the web application under load, using tools from the IIS/SQL website, this would help determine what you need. Maybe you could start by getting a couple of top of the range servers (from Dell?) for database and IIS, and go forward from there. Each server could be Windows 2008, and you would have to stick a copy on SQL Server 2008 on one of them.

Or maybe you have a few spare servers lying around that can be used for testing?

If you need extra redundancy then times that by two, and of course you would have to throw in your backup / firewall / antivirus as a factor (maybe that's already covered?).

You can of course happily run IIS (which comes with Windows 2008) and SQL server on one sole server, but I'm not sure that will help scalability in your instance.

Other people might be able to give you some real world scenarios on this forum, or may have differing opinions, I'd be interested to hear this myself!

Cheers...

Alex Shirley
