I feel like such a newbie, how do I create a new skin or are there more than one default templates out there?

I should not be so vague, I found a few free skins out there and am modifying them now to get the results I want, the real problem I am having is just changing the background color of my site.  I'm sure it's simple, if you have a direction to point me that would be great!  Thanks, Josh!
