see subject line.  i'm having a hard time finding a good one (that's also inexpensive.)  i need it to be role-based.

please be more specific about your needs - what do you mean with "role-based"? Built-in Newsletter module in admin menu allows you to send out bulk mails to role members.

One that I've been using is the OnyakTech NukeAl*rt module.

Sometimes some painful bugs and support can leave a lot to be desired... but I've asked on these forums for alternatives without a single suggestion!

It manages numerous campaigns quite well. You can schedule these daily, weekly etc... based on roles and also use SQL code to pull in lists - something I'm just starting to get into a lot more now - eg. people download a trial or sample and if the download date & user is logged (table - UrlLog) then you can have say 3 days later automatically followup emails sent out.

Not sure what other options there are to do that within DNN but I would be interested to know.  How else do people automatically email new members a day or a week later to ask what they thought?

ok, i have no idea why such a simple task is so complicated.  now i'm trying to use the supplied newsletter funtion.  i enter MY OWN WORKING email address as a recipient, send a test, and this is what the confirmation email says:
