FIrst of all thank you to everyone involved with this project.  I have read through the last month or so of threads just to familiarize myself a bit.  Giles you give a lot of feedback.  You deserve commendation!

In my implementation of store I have decided I cannot use the Store Menu module because it cannot be configured to list only the parts of the catalog relevant to the content of the current page.  This is a considerable limitation.  I hope the dev teams envisions a time when you can selectively list categories on the Store Menu and create distinct Store Menu listings per page (if not per module).

In the meantime I am able to reproduce the effect using the main menu of the site to mimic the Store Menu, and customizing the Store Catalog per page.  Thankfully there exists the "Detail Page" and "Return To" settings within the Catalog Settings.  Unfortunately, the sub-category menus within the Store Catalog have no settings and instead use the "Store Page" setting from the Store Info tab of the Store Admin.  If you could add settings to control the navigation of the sub-category menus within EACH Store Catalog module as the "Detail Page" and "Return To" exist now, I think you could add a lot of flexibility.  Otherwise allow the "Store Page" to be set to "Same Page" so each module can act independently.

In general I think you would serve the community best to focus on making the shopping cart experience as similar to the status quo among other e-commerce solutions.  It has a long way to go, but seems promising.

Hi,

Thanks for your comments.

I agree with limitations about the Store Menu. But, this kind of modifications could require a lot of work. Because from the beginning, the architecture was to have only one catalog by portal. I already added some settings like "Return To" to allow more flexibility. As you probably knows, I'm "open minded" to every suggestions. If this is valuable for the more larger number of users.

Could you give me more details about your needs. Which settings, how it should works, the "logic" behind and so on?

Gilles

We (team members) are Humans offering their knowledge, their work and their spare time FOR FREE to benefit the community. It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.

Quick example: Assume the portal is an online storefront. There are several pages of the site menu organized by product type and many of these pages include children and some of those children have children. This provides logical organization of similar products in a "main menu" format with which most users are familiar.

Let's say a user runs the mouse over the site menu tab for "PC Components" and a contextual menu drops down to reveal child pages including "Memory", "CPU", "GPU", etc. The user selects "Memory" and a page opens including a module for the Store Catalog configured to use the Default Category "Memory" which includes subcategories "DDR2" and "DDR3". The user is presented a subcategory menu horizontally across the Store Catalog module with text links for "DDR2" and "DDR3". The user clicks the text link for "DDR3". At this point the user is redirected to the default "Store Page".

It would be preferable to provide an option for the text menu list of subcategories to link to a page of the Admin's choosing. This could be an option within each Store Catalog module settings.  In our case we would specify "Same Page" so that the user was not directed away from our "Memory" page.

This would work even better if the Store Menu module included a "Default Category" setting which would restrict the top level of the categories displayed in that instance of the Store Menu module. In our case we would include both the Store Menu and Store Catalog modules on our "Memory" page and set them both to the same Default Category level "Memory". This would ensure the display and navigation of all categories and subcategories of Memory, and nothing else.  These modules would be included on every product page in the site, configured to display the respective content of each page.

The purpose of all of this is of course ease of use and logical organization of the storefront for the user. Almost everything we desire can be made to work through alternate use of site menus and portal features but we end up recreating the features of the Store modules.  It would be much easier to have the Store modules simply allow greater customization.

Thank you for your response! I hope I was able to convey my point clearly.
