I have a client who keeps getting a periodic error that states the following:

Timeout expired. The timeout period elapsed prior to obtaining a connection from the pool. This may have occurred because all pooled connections were in use and max pool size was reached.

If I fire up SQL Server Activity Monitor and cruise the DNN site...I consistently see 2 database connections.  Then if I go to the Store Catalog page, and repeatedly hit REFRESH, I see dozens of connections spawning, all trying to get the same data:

Store_Administration_GetTaxRates

I suspect there is a data reader that is not being closed.  But if this is the case, I would expect that I would not be the only person to see this behavior.  Maybe I am the only one with nothing better to do than hit F5 repeatedly on the Store Catalog page.

Hi Dan,

You'r right, I have found a data reader not closed in the tax controler. This will be corrected in the next version. In the meanwhile, you can try this two workaround;

  1. Reduce the number of products displayed by page.
  2. Increase or define the Max Pool Size inside your connection string (web.config). I have experienced the same problem with an high level trafic web site for a French newspaper web site under dnn (they do not use the Store module). Because a lot of requests are done in the same time, users receive sometimes this error. When Max Pool Size is not defined (like in the dnn connection string) the default value of 100 is used. Then, if more than 100 requests are done in the same times this error is raised.

It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.

Hi Gilles,

Thanks for confirming my suspicion.   This is a significant issue for a site with a lot of traffic.  Do you have any idea when a patch or next release may be expected?

Dan

Hi Dan,

I plan to produce the next version for the end of this month. Then, it will have to be submited to the release process, which should take approximately 2-3 weeks. But I cannot guarantee these deadlines, because we do not have any control on the release process. If you can't wait until this date, send me an email (look in my profile), I will return a patch to you.

Gilles

Thanks for the post!

I was getting the error once weekly and had to restart the application pool each time.
I closed the datareader now, i'll let you know how it turns out :)
