Seriously, I have seemingly tried and done every combination of every fix for the past two weeks and have always gotten this error upon installation:

Executing Additional Scripts:
00:00:16.046 -   Creating Portal: My Website
00:00:16.218 -   Error: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.

I installed 4.0.2 about two months ago for a client but cannot even repeat that feat. I guess I'm just venting, and anxiously awaiting that magic piece of code that helps me.

Since I am unable to Create my portal, does anyone think it would be possible to manually enter information into the database to complete my installation?  I'm desperate :)

Michael, wouldn't the following scenario work:

  • Install web site locally on your own machine so that the web.config makes the appropriate changes where someone has full control.
  • Set up the SQL database on GoDaddy.com and modify the web.config to match the SiteSqlServer settings.
  • Copy the resulting configured files over to GoDaddy.com.
  • Apply the virtual folder permissions.
  • Browse to the page to install the site.

I ask because I tried doing it this way, but did not get anywhere. I get as far as the site installing itself, then a Permission error:

Yes, that is exactly how a got around the inability to have the web.config file updated on the hosting account.

As for this error:

00:00:09.375 -   Error: Request for the permission of type 'System.Security.Permissions.FileIOPermission, mscorlib, Version=2.0.0.0, Culture=neutral, PublicKeyToken=b77a5c561934e089' failed.
00:00:09.375 -   Portal failed to install:

Have a look at the files and folders that where created.  The two main folders that have items added/created during the installation are Portals and DesktopModules.  See what folders and files are created and which haven't.

Well, I got it installed. Basically it was a pretty easy install

1. Download and unzip the install package to a folder, upload those files to site.

The reason I uploaded the files first was because on the first two install attempts I created the virtual directories first, and always got the error that I posted earlier.

2. Create sql database and virtual directories that Michael described on http://www.northernstarsolutions.com/Troubleshooting/GodaddyHosting/tabid/61/Default.aspx

3. Edit connection strings and upload web.config

4. installed the site using website/install/install.aspx

The install did work, and I clicked the link to view my portal and got a database error about not being able to find Siteurls (because I forgot to move it prior to the install) so I moved it afterwards and refreshed the page and I got to the site.

Phase 1 is complete, now for the real bread and butter of dnn.... learning what to do with it. I'd like to thank Michael for all his help, and sticking around in this thread. And to everyone else who posted a solution to any problem.

Robirt,

Out of curiousity, what version of DotNetNuke did you install on your GoDaddy site?

There seems to be this continuing thread amongst people who struggle and struggle and eventually get it installed. I wonder if some people are using the 3.x framework of DNN and are finally successful, whereas I'm trying the 4.0.3 DNN framework and I continually get stuck.

I'm able to get as far the prior error I posted, and then all that happens is I get this not so descriptive error:

Server Error in '/' Application.

Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Description: An unhandled exception occurred during the execution of the current web request. Please review the stack trace for more information about the error and where it originated in the code.

Exception Details: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.

Source Error:

An unhandled exception was generated during the execution of the current web request. Information regarding the origin and location of the exception can be identified using the exception stack trace below.

Stack Trace:

[NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object.]
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings.GetPortalSettings(Int32 TabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +125
   DotNetNuke.Entities.Portals.PortalSettings..ctor(Int32 tabId, PortalAliasInfo objPortalAliasInfo) +83
   DotNetNuke.HttpModules.UrlRewriteModule.OnBeginRequest(Object s, EventArgs e) +3797
   System.Web.SyncEventExecutionStep.System.Web.HttpApplication.IExecutionStep.Execute() +92
   System.Web.HttpApplication.ExecuteStep(IExecutionStep step, Boolean& completedSynchronously) +64

Version Information: Microsoft .NET Framework Version:2.0.50727.42; ASP.NET Version:2.0.50727.42

I'm going to try and step through Default.aspx and try and figure out what is causing the error so that it can be corrected manually.

- Andre
