Hi Will,

I'm wondering if you had the oportunity to chat with Peter Donker about the work that was done by the French community on the module recently.

We had a national meeting of the French DNN community last month. Peter was there, and amongst many things we had that long discussion about the Store module.

Here's the picture.

After Allan Thompson gave away the code from wwstore, as I heard at the meeting, you decided not to take over his version because of many technical difficulties. By that very time, quite a few teams did give a try (Peter said he's got his own custom code base), and amongst them some people from the French community decided to move on and do the clean up.

I have not been involved with the project so far, but I understand they did some good job bringing the project to a new stage, doing loads of trimming, debugging, quite a few extensions and moving on to a clean vs 2005 project.

As for now, it's being released as the WWstore open source module v 2.06 on www.dotnetnuke.fr, and actually it is the one project that the French dnn.fr guys are trying to put up together beyond the regular localization job to tighten the local community.

Well, coming back to that meeting we had, as we were talking with Peter and the dnn.fr team, we came to the first point that the dnn.fr people were a bit frustrated of the weak relations they could build with the american core so far, which Peter relayed as a shared feeling amongst several dnn public actors in Europe.

Then we had that talk about the Store module story, Peter told us that you're friends, that he had learnt about your recent involvement as this project's lead, that he knew the task is pretty big and you're busy doing many other things so we eventually came to the conclusion that it might be an oportunity both for the communities gathering and the project itself to see if some sharing could be done there.

Would you then consider having a look at their current code base (registration required), since it probably looks much better than what you first saw in the initial WWStore.

As for me, I'm not too familiar with the project itself nor the code, I'm CTO of one the French companies of the DNN scene, and we're just doing many other things for now, yet I thought of relaying the information as I've got good contacts with many people out there; I tend to think from an outside perspective that there may be some place for a positive collaboration there, given a little effort to make up the proper connections.

Thanks for considering the whole thing.

Hi Jesse,
We (Will, Benoît, and me) are currently working out how to proceed. So in answer to your questions: yes, everyone is aware and we're in communicado to come up with a workable solution. We'll get back to this once decisions have been made.

Peter,

Could you please update about the possible merging of the original and French initiative?

Thanks,

Marc

After reading Wills blog this sounds like an excellent solution. Of particular interest is the upgrade path. Will we be able to upgrade WWStore to the core module or the core module to the new version or will there be something for everyone.

From what I can tell here the WWStore has become the module of choice over the core version. Becasue the core store was pretty much useless as it was would the better upgrade path be from WWStore to Core?

Hi,

For now the new version will upgrade from Store 1.0.1 only. I'm looking for create an SQL script to migrate WWStore to the new Store. Given that a hundred users of the French community use WWStore 2.0.8, one will probably need that you make initially the update of WWStore 2.0.3 towards version 2.0.8, then the migration towards Store with script.

We (team members) are Humans offering their knowledge, their work and their spare time FOR FREE to benefit the community. It would be so particularly appreciated that your messages begin with "Hello" and end with "Thank you" or any other form of politeness. Ask yourself what your reaction would be, if you were approached by me (a total stranger) on the street to ask you something without saying "Hello" nor "Thank you"? After several years of services dedicated to the community, I begin to be tired to read requests without any form of politeness.
