I just got AD authentication setup and it seems to auto-login ok when I browse to it. I do have a couple of questions for the experts:

  1. In my FirstName & LastName properties are wrong, my firstname shows my username, and my lastname shows my domain. Could this be an issues with AD or is this normal behavior?
  2. If I log off and try to log back in with domain/username, it will not allow. Should it be redirecting to admin\security\WindowsSignin.aspx?
  3. Stupid ?: What is mixed-mode authentication?
  4. Rhetorical ?: Why hasn't the core fixed the DisplayName problem? This seems to have been around since September and the fix has been posted in the ticket, so what gives?.

1. What version of DNN? From 4.3.7 on it (for sure from 4.4.0 on) copies the correct information into the First/Last name fields and had the correct display name. The only thing I can think of off the top of my head is that information isn't in your user's AD profile so the DNN code is putting whatever info it can in there (to prevent errors).

2. What error do you get when you use domain/username. Better yet, try domain\username (note the different "\" mark).

3. Mixed-mode is so that you can have either DNN users or AD users access the site or if you need to make the site available outside your intranet. Under strict Authentication (the Authentication line is uncommented in the web.config) anyone visiting the site on a computer that isn't on your domain will get a pop-up box asking for domain credentials. Mixed-Mode (Authenication line is commented out) allows anonymous users to browse the site or to register and join the site like they could without Authentication.

4. See my answer 1.

1. 4.4.1. I don't have access to AD, so it is possible that there is no profile info. Thanks for the tip

2. Login Failed, remember that Passwords are case sensitive (In the log: System.NullReferenceException: Object reference not set to an instance of an object. at DotNetNuke.Security.Authentication.ADSIProvider.GetUser(String LoggedOnUserName, String LoggedOnPassword)

3. Thanks!

4. Retracted

No indication of what is Null in the log file?

1) Correct - if no AD account is found, it fills in what it can and you end up with what you described.

2) I know in my environment, the password is not stored in AD and would end up with that error.  Since the user is already authenticated against the network, I've modified the core to use the ADSIProvider.GetUser(String LoggedOnUserName) instead.
