Is it possible that you can create an event module that can be filtered by a category and that event list then can show the next event of that category type and display its detail?

I have a site that has a calendar of events however the organization promotes one primary monthly event.  So on the front page, we want to show the event details with enroll options for the next primary monthly event.  Currently we do this thru a series of forms that is not at all tied to the event module.  It would be nice if we can tie all events into the event module and let the site do the rest.

 Sooo......you just want to show the next upcoming event for a certain event category?
 
One easy solution would be to use the REPORTS module to query the desired data from the EVENTS table and display results in-page. 
 
An example of this type of solution in conjunction with the EVENTS module (but using free Advanced Datagrid module instead of REPORTS) is here:
