Hi there,

I'm about to start a new DNN (4.03) e-commerce project for a small shop.  I was wondering whether anyone is using this module in a production site?  I see from some of these posts that there are improvements still to be made and of course this is an open project, but the main question is; is this ready for a production site (on a small scale) or should I look for other options?

I've read a few posts but wasn't sure whether this is really in wide-spread use.  Could anyone share their experiences using this module on a production site?

Cheers,

Matty

Matty,

Personally, I would wait.

It's still fairly non-robust at this point. That is not to say the project members aren't doing a great job, but rather an eCommerce framework for DNN and an eStore for a production venture are both big deals.

This is especially true when you have clients breathing down you neck for enhancements (and the core team doesn't know about them, or they are very client based).

Then it becomes a "split-from the core project" decision wich is never a good one.

If you have a "ready client", and unless they really need DNN, I would go with another good .net store.

Until then... keep installing and testing this one.

This team is working hard to get a robust product out (and providing an extensible framework). The added time pressure of production servers,  I am certain, doesn't help.

For a very robust eCommerce solution that is not DNN try: http://www.aspdotnetstorefront.com/

I am not an affilaite or a reseller... it's just a darn good product.

I hope soon that this DNN project will far surpass them though....

Cheers,

Thanks Brad,

Sounds like good advice.  I was originally hoping to stay with DNN, although I could be swayed towards this aspdotnetstorefront product as it looks superb.  Thanks for the tip.

One DNN Module I did find was Portal Store from dnn-modules.  Does anyone have experience of it?

ps. I hope this is the right forum to ask this type of stuff.... I dont want to upset anyone by taking the focus off the Store project - I'm understably a big supporter of it - just need a solution asap is all.

Matty,

I have direct experience with it, and have seen it's progresssion from it original purchase from Brice Snow at Snowcovered. Basically, this is the Snowcovered Store a few rev's removed under the studious care of Richard (dnn-modules).

I think the world of Richard and his product line. His support has been fantastic. However, I have tried on 4 occasions now to implement the DNN-Modules store. Each time the client felt it was too complex, and asked if there were other options.

Each time I showed them the store mentioned earlier (only second to showing Richards Store, as I wanted it all in DNN). In each time they chose not to implement the DNN-modules store. 3 went on to use the aspdotnetstorefront, and 1 went with a Linux/Ruby solution.

I have a very large interest in using a DNN / DNN eCommerce solution. But one hasn't yet presented itself. So I wait on the CORE Store. I have offered a suggestions 'here and there' as to how certain provider-model pieces might make it more extensible, however, there are larger issue looming here than eCommerce (ie. the membership model change).

So with a paying client, and high expectations, I went non-DNN... for now....

The store's I mentioned are:

http://www.globaldecor.com/

http://www.starletteohara.com/

http://www.bsi123.com/

The Linux/Ruby Solution I didn't end up doing so I am not sure on it's final URL or success.

Hope that helps,

Brad,

Thanks a lot for useful information. I will definitely investigate it while waiting for core module patiently. Have you looked at the aspdotnetstroefront's source code? Is it easy to understand and customize?

thanks a lot.

Frank
