Sorry you can do it easily. It's posible to use the control id to define some css, but this id can change if you reorder the modules present on the page. Using IE8 with developement tools or FF with FireBug, you could inspect the rendered page to find each control id generated for each category. In this case, you could add a class definition in the StoreFront.css file like this one:

#dnn_ctr425_CategoryMenu_MyList__ctl2_linkCategory {
 background-image:url('YourImagePathFileName');
}
