I'm most interested in the messaging module to serve a conduit so I don't have to publish member email addresses to other members. In other words, a way for members to contact other members... so that they can then take their communication to e-mail if they so choose.  It also allows members to contact other members without exposing the e-mail address of the member being contacted.

First, I love the fact that users get notification of a new message via e-mail.

I'm also concerned that messages will add up on storage constraints and also ultimately slow down the site.  I can't seem to find an option to:

-Limit the number of messages that can be archived (e.g. 10)
-Limit the number of messages that can be received/unread (e.g. automatically delete oldest message after 10 are received).
-Automatically delete messages after 30 days
etc.

Most smaller sites simply can't afford the storage and bandwith requirements of being a "facebook" social replacement where we store absolutely everything on our own server.

Is there a setting somewhere to accomplish these goals?  Or should I request an enhancement?

at present we dont have settings for those but we intend enhancing this area and adding new functionality -most of those are on our plate along with "digest" updates i.e. only send 1 email per day with links to all the received messages etc, but feel free to log them at support.dotnetnuke.com (if we have existing enhancements that meet them QA will link them as duplicates). You can view the existing messaging settings at admin->site settings, advanced settings -messaging settins.

I should also mention that messaging was designed to scale and limits data stored e.g. we only store 1 copy of the message and create line items for each recipient in another table, rather than creating multiple duplicate copies of the mails i.e. if you send a mail to 1000 people relatively little data is stored.
