Hi all,

I have a few questions regarding migrating dnn from one server to another. The company I work for currently is using DNN4.6.0 and would like to move the site to another server. Currently the DB (over 100gb) is running on server 2003 and has SQL 2000 and the same configuration for the IIS on a different server. Now we are getting 2 new servers one for db and one for iis. My question is could I just do a backup of the db that is is sql 2000 and restore it on sql 2008 without any conflict and same thing with the iis could move the file to a more recent iis on a new server. What is the best way of doing that without having to upgrade to dnn 6.X.  I have 120 portals and over 300 users (admins). Please help.

hello,

yes, thats entirely possible. You either need to detach and attach the database or else do a backup and restore to do so (create a database first and select "force restore" when restoring over it). Typically you need to fix the "orphaned" users as whilst the data is moved across the users aren't - see http://www.fileformat.info/tip/micros... (or else drop and create a new user -ensuring they're set as dbo). You'll probably want to add a portal alias for your new server first in DotNetNuke to allow you to test.

As for the folders and files they just get moved over, though you'll have to update the 2 connectionstrings in web.config to point to the new database server details

Hi Cathal,

Thank you very much for the quick response. I will get that started next week when I get the go ahead from my manager. I will let you know how everything went.

Just heard back from my manger and I'm moving with the migration next month. Now when configuring the IIS server, the asp.net needs to be install prior to to the IIS?

yes, you need to install the .net framework on the IIS server (depending on the version of windows it may already have .net 2.0, but you need need to ensure .net 3.5sp1 is installed - and its also a good idea to install .net 4.0)
