I was reading through an old forum post on taking a site offline and I thought the following comment would prove very useful, I just don't understand how to implement what the person was saying... They said "you can use the app_offline.htm file to take it offline, you must rename the file BEFORE you can actually run the upgrade though."

1) Where do I find the app_offline.htm file?

2) Also, once I am able to find it, what do I do with it to take my site offline?

3)Also, why is renaming the file important and how exactly do you complete this?

Any HTML file with at least 512 bytes called app_offline.htm and placed in the root of your ASP.Net application will stop the application to be executed. This will also prevent DNN upgrade to run. It is a good idea to use it while uploading files, afterwards remove it to get your web site executed. Another option is setting autoupgrade to false in your web.config file and call the upgrade using a call to /install/install.aspx?mode= upgrade

OK thanks, that sounds simple enough. How do I find the root of my ASP.net application?

root directory of your application is the folder pointed to by your IIS web site, where default.aspx and web.config files reside.

Sorry for posting twice. Originally when I made the post my browser was giving me problems and I uploaded the post twice without realizing what I had done. I only gave the same answer twice because people had responded to both threads so I wanted them to see my answers. Sorry again though.

In regards to your post above, I think I was able to find the root directory. I found the default.ascx file but there is no web.config file in that folder. There is only a web XML configuration file. Is this the directory you were talking about?
