Hi,

Congrats on the release of DNN 6.  I saw the DNNWerk rad editor provider is included in the release, this tool makes configuration a cinch however I have never been able to switch off the provider directly from Telerik because I have not found any providers that limit the user's media files to their own user folder as the Telerik provider does.  This would seem to be an extremely basic function of an editor provider, basic in the sense that is would seem strange to allow users to view others user's folders and files.  From what I can tell the DnnWerk provider still does not address the issue but I wanted to confirm that?  If that is true, is there any idea why such a basic and necessary function has been left out for so long?

BTW, on the DNN 6 release I have some small feedback.  I have been using DNN since v4 and I really like the recent improvements in DNN, it has gotten a nice performance boost and much needed UI work and a host of other great features.  Now about the UI work, I am currently building an extranet with DNN and I will be using V5.xx rather than 6.  While 6 offers some compelling benefits I notice it takes quite a bit longer administratively and I feel someone may have gotten carried away on the UI and JQuery.  The delay for getting to menu items is just too much, and the popups are cumbersome.  It is cool to pop a login div out or a form here and there but there is too much of it going on and at least based on what I have experienced there is added delay with the popouts too.  With that said I am used to using my own skins with the snapsis menu which employ no mouseover delays and allows me really to whip around the administrative areas.  I think in the future the UI work needs to be balanced with simplicity, but hey it is still so much better than the old blue/gray gradient skins and solpart.

Thanks,
Jason

Hello,
we have support for a "home" folder which is intended to be a folder for each user (e.g. to support adding avatar images etc.), but there are a few problems with this we're working on. However the telerik editor does integrate with the portal security settings, so you can set granular permissions per user or per role allowing users to read, delete and upload files.

The form patterns and pop-ups are of course still new so we'll be refining them and adding to them I'm sure over the next few releases, but one thing to be aware of is that we took into account that not everyone loves popups/lightboxes. You can disable these at the site level bu going to admin->site settings, click "advanced settings" tab, expand "usability settings" and uncheck "enable pop-ups"

You can also do this granularly at the ascx level e.g. go to host->extensions, edit a module eg. authentication, go to the module definitions section and click the pencil icon beside the control, you can now uncheck "supports popups" - this is why you see pop-ups for core functionality but not 3rd party modules at the minute. This was a change requested by various module developers during the beta period and I think allows a nice balance i.e. some modules will never inplement them and some will make liberal usage.

Thanks.

Thanks for taking the time to reply to my post, I am really glad to hear you can disable the popups and I will test this shortly to see if perhaps sticking with DNN 6 is a good idea after all :)  One thing I did not mention is we do use the same jquery lightbox for a few things on our site so the styles from both conflict, this is going to be a problem for some people because the classes used for the DNN lightbox are the same.

Can you point me in the direction to see how to implement the support you mentioned for the home folder?  So this is a separate folder automatically assigned to each user?  The radeditorprovider originally from Telerik does support an individual folder for each user although it is not turned on by default, however I know few people will have access to this since you need a Telerik license.  Also, Telerik has discontinued support for their radeditorprovider citing the fact this is now supported by DNN Corp.  Their implementation however is still not highly usable for the very simple user.  For instance, a simple user may easily overwrite files when they do not intend to, they may freely move files around thereby editing prior posts though that may not be intended behavior.  It may be difficult for them to find the file they wish to insert since it is not simply a matter of attaching the file but rather uploading and identifying the file next to all other files and then inserting it.  So, it does fall short of leading editors like those within the vbulletin software but is much better than the default rad editor setup.

Thanks for the great information!

theres no way to implement home folders (user folders are their proper name) they're automatic i.e. in older versions a new user to DotNetNuke didnot have any DotNetNuke filesystem permissions, whereas in 5.4.0 (and above) they automatically have permissions to their own "user" folder which allows them to upload files -this was introduced to ease user profiles i.e. each user can upload an avatar image.
