I have built a site. www.write-result.com. It is being hosted with Godady on my hosting account www.chrissyclary.com. It is in the file www.chrissyclary.com/test/write-result.com. When you go to www.write-result.com the url displayed is www.chrissyclary.com/test/write-result.com. I understand why, I pointed the domain from networksolutions to the file with my DNN host program (test/write-result) in my godady hosting center.

If I understand correctly if I create a parent portal with the URL write-reslut.com that when you request write-result.com it should take you to the site with the correct url displayed throughout the site. (is that right?)

The people at godady are telling me that to display the write-result.com url throughout my site I will have to uninstall and reinstall in a different file on the write-result.com domain (My problem there is that the domain is not registered on my account so the host program would inevatabley end up in a chrissyclary.com file anyway -- maybe????). They are also telling me that there are no other users that are hosting with godady who are using the DNN program who have parent portals with unique URLs (event though they have instructions on their site for doing so).  And that I would have to have a new copy of DNN for each site.

Also when I set up the parent portal I got an e-mail saying that the parent portal had been created, it took me to the host site. When I tried to log in using the log in info for that portal it would not let me in. So I am not really sure how to get to that parent portal anyway. I have removed that portal now thinking i did something wrong.

In the end I would like to have a host account and several prarent portal with unique urls. I am developing sites for a marketing firm and it think it would be easest in the end to do them all in the same program off a host site.

Please advise.

Clary

Hi Chrissy,

Let's recap your aims:

In the end I would like to have a host account and several prarent portal with unique urls. I am developing sites for a marketing firm and it think it would be easest in the end to do them all in the same program off a host site.

---------

There's got to be one Main firm that's the master of the rest? Let's use that hierachy as a way to set it up. The Main Firm as the Parent and the rest as Children. Don't worry... =) They will have their own Aliases(Urls). which means you could have

www.mainfirm.com,www.nextparent1.com,www.otherparent.com,www.lastparent.com for the supposed 4 portals you are going to create AND  they won't know the other exists.

if so, then maybe all you need to do is to: (Assuming you are NOT running the database on a separate server)

1) install DNN on GoDaddy. If you go Custom, save everything you've written down. like Hostname settings and all.

2) Log in. If you went with auto. use host|dnnhost

3) Change both Host and Admin passwords in User to secure your environment

4) Go to Host|Portals create new Portals for the rest of the Sites in the Marketing Firm.

or the other method is to just have an empty host, which i would suggest for general marketing/advertisements and then create the rest as parents,

I hope i've been clear enough for you. I 'm not sure what your level of understanding of DNN is so i'm trying to balance it out. =) Ask if you have more questions!
