I have been working on a website now for a month or so and we are about to "go live" with it and I wanted to confirm my technique for how I'm going to go about it:

1. My client has a current, live website with a ".org" extension they are still using.
2. They registered the ".net" version for me to use to develop the DNN site.
3. They want to use the ".org" version of the domain name on the new DNN site when it goes live - not just a redirect.
4. There's only one portal in this DNN installation (portal 0)
5. When we "go live" I plan to:

  • Change the current "www" IP address in the ".org" registry (at Network Solutions) to the IP address of the new hosting space (we have a dedicated IP address with the new hosting space).
  • Either add (or change?) the current portal HTTP alias in DNN to the ".org" version of the site name.
  • Change the site domain assignment in the Godaddy hosting cpanel to assign the ".org" version of the name to the hosting space.

Does this sound like it should work?

Yep.  If you're using the DNN interface, you'll need to add the new alias, log out, log into the new alias and delete the original.

Thanks for the reply. I was wondering about the fact that I wasn't offered the option to edit the one and only alias listed -- I have to add another one first in order to edit (or remove) the previous one. I guess that would be a great way to crash the site!

A question though -- would it cause problems to leave the old alias there and just add the new one? Or should I only have the single alias listed?

Thanks again.

Doesn't matter, leave it in and it won't cause any problems.

Just thought I'd follow-up -- everything went fine with the change over from".net" to ".org" over this morning!

Thanks again :-)
