We're doing some work on the update service to try and let people know if they're running a version of DotNetNuke with known security issues -you can see the security bulletins @ security.dotnetnuke.com . As for benefits, you can always view the changelog and roadmap @ support.dotnetnuke.com

If you  are on DNN 4.8.4, I strongly suggest to upgrade to DNN 4.9.4 (or 5.1.1, if the new features are of use for you) due to security fixes and numerous other issues fixed.

Upgrade is pretty easy: backup your database and files, unzip upgrade package hierarchically into DNN installation directory, overwriting existing files, and browse your site.

UPDATE:  So I found my problem and I thought I would leave this post up here for the next newbie who comes along with the same problem.  My server had blocked the zip file and would not extract the ascx.vb files.  Once the properties of the zip file were changed, the ascx.vb files extracted and all my problems were solved.  No problems with my web.config or anything else.

I did this exact upgrade on Sunday and I got an error at the web.config area of the upgrade.  Everything seemed to be working fine, however, when I try to install modules, access What's New or the Dashboard, I'm getting the following errors.  I'm not a techie but it looks to me as if the upgrade did not complete.  When I checked the web.config files to my backup, they seem to be the same file.

Error: Module Definitions is currently unavailable.

Since I did not have custom errors tag set to 'off', I could not see what the error was during the upgrade.  Could really use some help with this.  Thanks.
