Hi

I have a site hosted with one company and the domains are registered with another.

Our company developed a new site and hosted it with a shared hosting company and it operated under a temporary domain name (there was already a different live site which we were replacing).

Therefore the portal alias was “tempdomain/home/tabid/36/Default.aspx” (for example)

Today however we went live. The 3rd party company changed the CNAMEs of the real domain to point at the new site.

I was instructed by my hosting company to add the domain to the site as a domain alias with the “Create DNS Zone” checkbox unchecked (hosting management is H-SPHERE)

All well and good, typing in “www.domainname.ie” now reaches the new site. However it redirects from “www.domainname.ie” to “tempdomain/home/tabid/36/Default.aspx”
Obviously we don’t want a temporary working domain name to be visible to the users.

Now I have tried adding “www.domainname.ie” as the PortalAlias but it doesn’t work this way – the pages just seem to go into an infinite loading loop.
(I have also tried "domainname.ie" and "domainname.ie/home/tabid/36/Default.aspx")

The only portal alias that seems to work is the temporary domain name

Anyone have any ideas?

The alias should simply be www.domainname.ie

If you are adding values to the PortalAlias table directly via SQL you must also re-start the application for the changes to take effect.  Simply re-uploading your web.config will trigger the restart.

Mitch,

Maybe you can give me some advice on 3essentials.  I have a DNN development site that I have installed at the root.  I have not yet pointed the nameservers to the new site - I have modified my local host file to develop the site.  I need for others to view the site without modifing thier host files.

I registered a new domain name and added it as an alias in Plesk and added it as an alias in DNN.  I cannot seem to get the site to get past Plesk - I get the Plesk admin instead of the DNN site that I am attempting to hit.

Any suggestions?

I found the solution - with the help of 3Essentials tech support.  They do a great job!!!

I set up the alias in Plesk but did not activate for the DNS for the web in the alias DNS settings.  As soon as this was done it worked like a charm.

Hi Mitch

I was in one of those frames of mind as one does in this job where I thought - that'll never work - just figured it was too simple

But it did!

Perfect, temp domain hidden, happy developer!

Regards

John
