My host provider is saying that I am using too much memory.  My host provider's configuration of IIS is causing my DNN application and web sites to be unloaded from memory after a short period of inactivity.  As a result it was taking an unacceptably long time for my web sites to come up. To combat that problem I  implemented a process to request a page from the web site every 5 minuets, which keeps that application and web site in memory.  Now my host provider is saying I am using too much memory.

Is there anyway to address the performacne of my appliction and get my host provider off my back about memory usage?

A lot of hosting providers recycle application pools after a short period of inactivity - this ram is then available to any sites on the same server that have active requests. This is a good way to maximise the performance of sites (or the number of sites per server, which is good for host provider profits but not good for users with a small number of users [their app pools get recycled more often]). This may well be the issue in your case. By adding a "keep-alive" page you're actually working around the ISP solution as it fools IIS into thinking a site is still active.

Without further details it's impossible to say whether your site is using too much RAM or else that your hosting provider has too many sites on the server or unrealistic RAM expectations i.e. some hosts only allow 30MB ram per site, some give 50 or 100MB (or even more). I would start by asking your host provider what their RAM allocation per site is, and how much RAM you've been using.

I recently had this issue with Ihost, and was forced to move to a virtual private server. I love DNN, but there is no way any user should have to wait the 20-30 seconds it takes for DNN to load the application if the worker processes is recycled. I moved to a VPS server and changed the shutdown worker process value (default is 20 minutes). This will keep your DNN app loaded in memory so it is quick and responsive.

Thank you both for responsing.  My host provider is saying that one of my web sites is using 100mb memory - this does seem like a lot.  The site is not a large web site - or is 100MB o.k.?

If I am using too much memory - what should I look at to decrease my memory usage?

Again thanks for the help because they are really on my back!

100MB is quite a lot (AFAIR the default usage of a vanilla dotnetnuke install is 26MB)- typically RAM is used for cached items, the .net framework itself, and any used assemblies. If you're using caching on modules with a lot of content that can consume a lot e.g. there was a bug in an older version of the blog module which used a lot of cache, the current version (and soon to be released one) fix that. The other big item that takes cache is having a lot of modules - if you're not using modules, uninstall them.
