Any idea what causes this?  I see this in the logs randomly and it seems that it has multiple instances within seconds of each other.

I started getting this as well on a new 4.9 site. I think the News Feeds module  could be causing it (just a guess). I see you are using it on your homepage as well. I have disabled Ajax which you cn so in the latest release and set up an event alert to monitor whether it reoccurs.
