I have installed SQL Server 2005 with SP2, Win Vista Ultimate, IE7 and IIS7.0. I have been doing a lot of reading and research regarding the HTTP 404 error I'm receiving. I have ASP.Net 2.0 enabled on IIS 7.0 and version 4.3.6 of DNN. The DNN installation succeeded and I'm able to view the portal's default.aspx page. When I attempt to log into the portal for the first time, I get the following error:

Server Error in Application "Default Web Site/DotNetNuke"

HTTP Error 404.0 - Not Found

Description: The resource you are looking for has been removed, had its name changed, or is temporarily unavailable.

Error Code: 0x80070002

Notification: MapRequestHandler

Module: IIS Web Core

Requested URL: http://localhost:80/DotNetNuke/Home/tabid/36/ctl/Login/Default.aspx

Physical Path: C:\Projects\DotNetNuke_Source\Website\Home\tabid\36\ctl\Login\Default.aspx

Logon User: Anonymous

Logon Method: Anonymous

Handler: PageHandlerFactory-ISAPI-2.0

Most likely causes:

  • The directory or file specified does not exist on the Web server.
  • The URL contains a typographical error.
  • A custom filter or module, such as URLScan, restricts access to the file.

What you can try:

  • Create the content on the Web server.
  • Review the browser URL.
  • Create a tracing rule to track failed requests for this HTTP status code and see which module is calling SetStatus. For more information about creating a tracing rule for failed requests, click here.

More Information...

Server Version Information: Internet Information Services 7.0.

I have granted the ASP.Net machine account "Full Control" and the Network Service Control user "Full control". At this point, I'm at a loss and would appreciate all the feedback. I have blown everything away and restarted 3 times. I always can get a successful installation but cannot access the login page with the 404 error.

Thanks in advance,

Aaron

This error means that the file or directory does not exist on the server. Create the file or directory and try the request again.

Why would the following path not exist? This is the same installation that I have running at http://soccer.awsoftware.net and I do not have this issue at my hosting service. Is this still an issue with permissions and Vista? If so, how can I allow DNN to create the directory?

I have resolved my error by performing the following actions:

1) Created a directory for my DNN application and ensured the following users had access:
      a) ASP.Net Machine - full control
      b) IIS_User and Network Service - read/write
2) Created a Web application on IIS 7 and made sure the application was using the classic 2.0 application framework.
3) I installed the DNN application 4.3.6 after configuring the web.config with DB information
4) Before viewing the portal, I switched the application pool to IIS 7 default 2.0 integrated application pool and ran the APPCMD command to register the DNN application into the application pool.

After I performed these steps, I was able to run and login my DNN application. I hope these steps help someone else with Vista because I have been working on this issue for 5 days with a lot of trial and error. You need to also make sure that you have the 2.0 framework enabled in IIS 7 and for a good resource see http://www.iis.net

Good Luck Everyone!
Aaron

Finally I solved the error. Do attention to the IIS7 installation, not only the IIS6 compatible services are required, the ASP.NET (under WWW-Service, Development Services) are required too. That was my main problem. After the installation of this missing services, I deleted the the dnn website in IIS7, then I created it as Application within the DefaultWebSite, set the ApplicationPool to Classic, that was it. As my clerk is not developping with Visual Studio, he has only to learn about using DNN and doing skins, for him it's working perfect. I was using only the install zip of DNN441.
