I have a site that is DNN 4.0.3 / MSSQL 2000 and I want to upgrade to DNN 4.3.4.

Can someone please tell me the best way to do it?

Can I simply unzip 4.3.4 on top of the current install, protecting the web.config file?  Is there more to watch out for?

I haven't made changes other than installing some additional modules and skins.

Thanks for any help!

The first thing you might want to do is review the Module Installation.pdf file that comes with the documentation. There are also quite a few threads including an installation guide in the "Install It!" forum.

Basically when upgrading first back up your DotNetNuke directory and database in the event of errors. Then you do unzip the 4.3.4 installation over top of your 4.0.3 installation again taking care not to overwrite your web.config file. You must use your new web.config and edit it with the connection strings, the validationkey, decryptionkey and any other values you personnally may have changed from your old config file.

Browse to your site and watch the upgrade take place.

Thanks for your advice.

Here is what I did:
  1. Backed up my database and web site directory
  2. Unzipped the DotNetNuke 4.3.4 Upgrade file on top of my existing web site
  3. Browsed to the web site
    1. The upgrade started
    2. I clicked after getting "Click here to proceed with the upgrade"
    3. I clicked after getting "Click here to access your portal"

Then ... I got this error:

Server Error in '/stockcentral-dewey' Application.

Problem solved!

I found the answer in another post.

There are differences in the web.config for 4.3.4.  So, following the instructions I found, I did the following:

  1. Copied release.config to web.config
  2. Fixed the connection settings for my database
  3. copied the machinekey settings from my old web.config to the new one
  4. copied InstallationData
Now it works!  I hope this helps someone else...
