Greetings! I have a site running successfully on a remote host but also want to run it on my local machine to work locally in Visual Web Developer and preview skin changes etc. locally. Nevertheless, while working locally I would like to be able to to view and if need be edit content on the database of the remote system.

So - I have copied down my entire site, set up the site in IIS, connected to the remote DB using SQL Server Management, BUT - if I open the site from the file system and try to preview a page, I get this error:

"A network-related or instance-specific error occurred while establishing a connection to SQL Server. The server was not found or was not accessible. Verify that the instance name is correct and that SQL Server is configured to allow remote connections. (provider: Named Pipes Provider, error: 40 - Could not open a connection to SQL Server) "

And I cannot open the site through local IIS (even though it is running in local IIS), because I get this error:

"Unable to open the Web site 'http://xyz.com". The Web server does not appear to have FrontPage extensions installed."

I would greatly appreciate any suggestions!

This error signifies that your web host does not allow remote connections to the SQL server database. There are still a few web hosts that do not allow you to connect remotely to the SQL Server database - either through Management studio or Visual studio (and I do not understand why they do not allow as there are no security concerns if you have properly configured the firewall).

When you open the website from Visual studio, you need to have frontpage extensions installed on the server and enabled for your website. Thereafter, you will need to specify the username/password to connect to the website. You will need to ask your web host to install frontpage extensions for your website.

There are quite some hosts who do not allow you to either connect to the database remotely and open/edit website from Visual studio. However, being a web host, we do believe that this is a must as we have several customers who needs to connect to the website/database remotely and perform the updates to the website directly.

Thanks,

- Rick

Thanks, Rick! Sorry it took me so long to follow up. Had to try a number of things. It seems I was asked for FrontPage extensions when I tried to open my site from my local IIS host because VWD wanted to open the remote host using FrontPage extensions, so I had to go and install them. I could have accomplished the same thing just using the FTP option. This means that I am actually editing directly on the hosted site, which is regarded as the "local site" while my hard drive becomes the "remote site".

So, while I am able to work directly on the live site, which has certain advantages while in development, I still haven't found a way to edit files on my local host and be able to preview them in a browser from my local host with the data from the remote SQL server, even though I am connected to it via MS SQL Server Management Studio Express. Or is there something else meant by "remote connection" here.

Surely this can't be an unusual scenario. I used this method (edit locally, preview with remote DB data) when creating a site recently with Ektron's commercial CMS system (which I recommend if you have around 10k handy).

I greatly appreciate your help.

Cheers, Michel
