Two steps from perfection.

Moderators understand their modules and the questions and solutions posed in their respective forums.

STEP ONE: What if each moderator added a "Solutions" thread where they alone would post top questions and their solutions.

STEP TWO: Then the top level community forum could pull from each module's "Solutions Thread" for a "Most Recent Solutions" feature.

I cannot be the only one who tires of searching endless page by page, thread by thread to find the answer everyone is asking for buried on page 43!!!, thread 9, answer 12 after 45 minutes of reading. Insane.

I won't even bring up the searches that fail to the ever popular yellow error screen that I see so much at DNN that I'm beginning to think it's a skin!

I try and present possible solutions to problems instead of just complaining. I sincerely hope I've made a contribution to a life of fewer clicks for all of us.

BTW Would it kill to have a "Select All Forums" option on the primary search page?

I think this is an excellent idea... basically combine the forums with a FAQ. 

Basically take the one question and the "best" answer and put it in a faq associated with the forum.  A given thread could have a post flagged as the question (basically the post that best frames the question, not necessarily the first) by the moderator and another post flagged as the "best" answer by the moderator.  Possibility of flagging other posts as "alternatives" answers.  Posts thus flagged would automatically populate the FAQ.  The "weight" that posts are given could also be incorporated (here i'm thinking in determination of best and alternative answers).  This would hopefully reduce the issue you raise of having to dig through threads to go from the original question to the group consensus of an answer... a twenty post thread being reduced to two posts in a familiar format, that of the FAQ (with the ability to see the whole thread if so desired).

   I would also have to agree with this idea, as I myself have spent countless hours searching online finally to post a question as I can not find the answer only to find some posting a link to another forum that I have missed that did contain the answer.  It does grow tiring after a while of having to continue searching through thread by thread when you know there must already be an answer out there.  It would be nice if one of the DNN core developers would read this thread and to comment on this idea as it appears to be a sound idea.

Excellant approach - So what jqueipo (me too) is trying to say that

Forums should have bit more functionality on moderator side.

  1. When a new message is posted, it notifies moderator.
  2. Moderator logs in and view the thread.
  3. At this interface, moderator should have interface with following option
    1. is it "Question", if yes "Rate it (weight)" 
    2. is it "Answer", if yes "Rate it (weight)"
    3. is it "Comment"
  4. Forum search should have options related to right Questions and Answers.
  5. Module Developers can utilise true Question posts for next version requirement.
  6. For important threads moderator can utilise Answers posts to develop FAQ that should appear (if exists) as link with each thread as Extracted Knowledge.

 

I hope this discussion will continue to some concrete outcome.

an approach - on aswering a post the person answering has the option of placing the question and answer on the knowledge base if the question is already on the KBG then the reply is posted to the KB but hidden till moderated. If question and answer is  added to the KB then it is hidden untill moderated. Sounds fairly easy but in real world is a bit more complex but still workable.

Problems - there are multi questions on the forums already asking the same question in a slightly different way - needs a bit of fuzzy logic to sort these out rather then leaving it all upto a moderator. The KB needs a formal approach - categoried strictly. KB seperate from the forum they simply link together. I use a similar system on my trouble tickets for my clients - over time they end up simply going to the KB or the trouble ticket system pulls the answer from the KB and thus answers their trouble ticket.

To work out the fuzzy logic for the DNN forums one would need to have a dump of the subjects fields in the current forums in the first instance ( this helps to generate the rules for the same qustion in a slightly different format) then if you where going to say build a KB based on the current DNN forums a desktop application that could search on subject field across the current dnn forums would shorted the process somewhat.

Once the KB is built then when a new thread is posted the kb is searched on the entered subject text and a list of possible answers if any  are diisplayed before the poster enters his post text.

Just some thoughts
