Greetings!

On DNN 6.1.4 (going to do a upgrade this week). Last year for PAX East I took a bunch of video clips, converted them to .flv (flash) and uploaded them and embedded them via my blog module, they displayed and played fine. However this year I am trying to do the same (I have not tried to upload local videos for some time) got back from PAX, uploaded various videos to 2 different news/blog modules (to eliminate it is just a module specific issue) and I keep getting same issue where the video won't play in most browsers.

With the .flv files I get a message that says "this video is currently not available please try again later" with 'google video' in the corner. I also tried .mpg format and keep getting quicktime plugin missing error even though it is installed. This issue happens in both IE9, latest firefox and waterfox. However in Chrome videos play/display fine.

However I can embed youtube embed code and the video plays fine. So seems it is a issue with playing local videos.

Only think I can think of that changed is on the host level I changed my jquery from local to google hosted. I restored it back to local but same issue still persists.

If anyone has some ideas or know fix I would really appreciate it, thank you.

Peter

please check file system permissions for the folder, you are storing your videos in, web site visitors need to be able to read the files.

Thank you for the reply however I had my hosting provider check folder permissions and they state they are correct. They also looked into the issue further and this is the information they sent me;

Peter,

This issue was escalated for me to review and here is a summary of what I've seen so far:

1. If I go to http://www.wodnews.net/Blogs/tabid/82... using Chrome, I can play the videos on that page. The videos do not work when I use another browser.

2. While using Firefox, I used its developer tools to look at the individual HTTP requests and responses that were occurring while trying to view the first video on that page. The developer tools told me that I was getting a 404 error while trying to retrieve http://www.wodnews.net/Portals/0/Uplo...

2. I noticed that if I cleared Chrome's cache and then went to http://www.wodnews.net/Portals/0/Uplo... I would get a 404 error, just like Firefox. But if I went to http://www.wodnews.net/Blogs/tabid/82... first and started playing the first video on that page, then I could go to http://www.wodnews.net/Portals/0/Uplo... and the Flash video file would be downloaded.

3. I ran Process Monitor on the server to take a look at the files your site's worker process was actually accessing while I was performing these tests. I found that when I tried to visit http://www.wodnews.net/Portals/0/Uplo... and received a 404 error, that your site's worker process was actually successfully accessing the Homefront.flv file on the file system.

So far I haven't seen any indication that this problem is related to an issue with the server's configuration. The fact that the videos work in Chrome but not Firefox even though they are making the same type of HTTP request makes me think this must be an issue with something in the site's code. IIS would also normally handle requests for items with the .flv extension with the static file handler. Process Monitor shows that the Homefront.flv file was successfully opened by your site's worker process, a 404.0 error was still returned as if the file had not actually been found. I suspect that something within DNN is causing this to occur.

----

So basically what I have felt it was something to do with DNN but not sure what. Any other input or ideas appreciated,

this sounds weird, because direct links to .flv files like http://www.wodnews.net/Portals/0/Uploads/PAX/Homefront.flv are usually not handled by ASP.Net, but should be taken care of by the static file handler, outside of DNN.

 Sabastian,

I sent your reply to the hosting support team they looked into their backend further. Come to find out the hotlink protection they were using is causing the issue. When turned off (or a *.flv exception is entered) all the videos play in all browsers without issue. (since I have had this hotlink protection forever they are unsure why all of a sudden it is now causing issues, but in light of the fix the issue is moot, at least for me). Thank you so much for your input, really helped getting to the bottom of this.

Peter
