I have enormous difficults to install DNN, I use IIS webserver but I i'm not able to install a database (SQL Server Express, MySql, ...). I know
a software called WAMP, it installs MySql and Apache automatically. Can I use it? So my confuguration should be:

Webserver: Apache
Databese: MySql

Thank, Fabio Ingrosso

DotNetNuke needs the Windows Stack:

Windows OS
IIS
DotNet Framework
SQL Server (2000 or 2005 in any version)

You cannot replace this with the LAMP or WAMP stack.

Please describe your problems with SQL 2005 express.

Yes, this is definitely possible, but you'll have to do a lot of work on your end to make sure it works. First off, you'll need Apache and Mono as your web server. Since Mono is based on .NET 1.1, you'll have to use DNN3. The main problem you'll have with this is going to be path delimiters. There are hard-coded back-slashes littered throughout DNN. These need to be changed to use the framework's directory separator character. Most likely, you will find other issues when working with Mono, but this is the one you'll probably find the most often. As for working with MySql, you simply need a data provider for that (or any other) database. There are plans to do this in the future, but the project hasn't been started, yet, as far as I know. Do some searching around the web and you might find one - perhaps on SnowCovered.

Bottom line is, you can do it, but it'll be a lot of work. If it's that important, go for it. I would like to request that you post a list of changes in Gemini to have them integrated into the core. That would ensure that this type of thing would be easier in the future. One day we'll get there, but we need support for it on the core team.

"Can I write my own IIS using notepad?" - "Sure you can, you only need a bit of time and some programming experince..."

Michael, as far as I understand, Fabio's original question was about installation, not doing mayor core changes in DotNetNuke and creating a new db provider.

In the last discussion I had more than a year ago about writing a db provider, another contributor stated, that this is not a big thing - they started immediately and meanwhile became a DNN project, but I have not seen a first beta yet. And as long as you need a data provider for each module installed, using an extraordinary database will limit your flexibility significantly.

Just my 2 cents.

This thread is funny as nobody is answering Malotas questions:

Can I use a Webserver like Apache?

Malota has asked for WAMP, not LAMP. This is about using Apache on Windows. It has nothing to do with Mono or Linux.

There is a module mod_aspdotnet which adds ASP.NET to Apache. Some people even report that this support ASP.NET2.0.
So it is possible to run DotNetNuke on Apache though it makes no sense unless there is a company policy which denies the usage of IIS or you have just XP Home.

Can I use WAMP?

WAMP - windows - apache - mysql - php
DotNetNuke is not based on PHP and currently there is no (core) MySql data provider for DotNetNuke. So DotNetnuke is definitly not a WAMP application.

Enormous difficults to install DNN

Malota has a lot of difficults installing DotNetNuke. Comparing of installing a basic WAMP system I must obmit he is right. You download a single Installation file, run it and you are done. (http://www.wampserver.com/en/download.php)
Only thing missing is the portal software, so this is not really compareable.

Reading all forum posts for the last 2 weeks I have noticed that many users are totally overstrained installing DotNetNuke. Very often they never have used SQL Server, DotNet framework or configured IIS before.

For me as a developer with some years of asp.net expierence it is totally easy. Last installation took me about 5 minutes including 1 minute waiting for the first compilation of the portal start up. The installation description is fine, but it is targeted to a different audience as normal window users.

Easy installation in there eyes means running a setup.exe, pressing 2 times OK and you are done. The setup should examine the system, should install (and download) all needed components like SQL Server, Dot.Net framework and IIS, configuere them and start it up. This is the expection of a normal user reading something about easy installation. And he is right.

We should stop talking about calling dotnetnuke setup an easy installation. It is great and it will run out of the box only if you know how to setup your box.
