As part of the upgrade to 4.X I also had to upgrade the framework or rather side by side install with .NET 1.1, now using aspnet_regiis I have confiured the app to use framework 2.0 and rest of the apps are using 1.1. This website is also running in its own ApplicationPool.

Since earlier the validationKey was set to autogenerate and now that its using a different framework, would it affect the authentication e.g. each framework version generates its own key and hence passwords encrypted prevouls have no knowledge on keys to decrypt...? I am be completely off the base, but just wanted to be sure.

modify portal settings for registation mode directly in the database. Try values from 0..3 AFAIR.
