I have a number of people within my organisation who insist on having host access to our DNN portal, despite my repeated claims that it is not necessary.

Anyway it would appear that I am fighting a losing battle.

So my next step is to try and remove the access to a few of the options available within the host menu, namely

  • Host Settings
  • Portals
  • Module Definitions
  • File Manager
  • SQL
  • Languages
  • Host Accounts

While I recognise that this more or less makes the host account pretty redundant, I would like to know if this is possible.

I did follow one tip I found on the web and that was to go the the SQL page, copy the tab id. Then go to another page, click on the page settings and then amend the URL to use the SQL tab id. This then presented me with the page settings for the SQL page. Unfortunately though, the administrators access is disabled and therefore cannot be managed. I was going to add the individual host accounts who would be allowed access under the username.

I believe that this is fairly simple in version 5 onwards, but we are running v4.9.3 and we are NOT in a position where an upgrade is feesible.

Any help would be really appreciated.

You will have to explain to those people in your organization that what they want is not possible  :). A host user can do anything.. even put back the pages and modules you hide, so there is no point in hiding it.

What you should do is to find out WHY those people want the access, and WHAT they want to do with it. You can then create copies of host level modules, and make them work with portal users etc. Those modules, you can then put in the admin menu, accessible to admins, or in any other menu accessible for roles you select

One thing to remember: a host user can do EVERYTHING in an installation. Usually within an organization only very few people have host access, to minimize the possibility for errors. So what you could also do is make sure that everyone that wants host access also signs a contract making them personaly responsible for anything they might do wrong in the future.....

In the Tabs table within the DNN database, set the isDeleted field to 1 for the SQL tab page (normally TabID = 21).

You will probably have to restart the application for the change to take effect.

you would also need to disable module upload, host settings, fileupload and skin upload to completely lockdown your site. Just disabling the host>sql page will give you fake security.
