I'm a new user to DNN I've just set up DNN 5.0 on my local PC. I can login and manage the installation with the Admin and Host accounts. The URL is http://localhost/dotnetnuke.

I've created a new Parent portal called NewPortal using the "Default Website" template. The Security Settings are set up with a new user called TestUser.

The default Portal Alias is http://newportal/ and I've created another alias that points to http://localhost/newportal, but both say the page can not be found.

How do I login to the portal I just created so I can start managing it and adding skins & pages etc.? Is there another step I need to do on my PC (outside DNN)?

if you setup a new portal on a local machine, you need to add "newportal" als localhost alias in Windows/system32/drivers/etc/host file (using a text editor), otherwise the system doesn't know where to route the request to.

If you want to create a child portal, you need to specify the child folder during creation, adding a portal alias later is not sufficient.

Thanks Sebastian.

I've added "127.0.0.1 newportal" to the host file. But when I launch http://newportal, I just get my normal http://localhost page and no DNN interface.
Am I doing something wrong?

Steve

I figured it out!
I remembered the DNN installation instructions said to create a virtual directoy in IIS.

http://localhost/dotnetnuke points to the C:\DotNetNuke installation on my local PC.

I created a new virtual directory called "NewPortal" and pointed it to C:\DotNetNuke as well. Now http://localhost/NewPortal opens up and I can log in.

Thanks again for your help.
