Module caching for skin objects

I have a DDR menu that I'm using for my top navigation. When I add it directly to the page I can control the module caching.

But when I add it directly to a layout template I don’t appear to get these options. Is there any way I can control caching in this scenario? Am I better off adding it to the page as a module?

(It appears on pages behind a login, so page output caching isn’t much use here.)
