Hi,

I have just upgraded my DotNetNuke installation to 5.1.2.

Since doing this I am getting the error "Error: 'undefined' is null or not an object." on every poll in the Chat module.

This results in a long stream of errors down the chat module.

The weird thing is that this only occurs in IE8. It does not happen in Firefox.

Fortunately, I backed up my site before doing the upgrade.

After restoring the site, the problem disappeared.

I just wondered if anyopne else has the same problem, if they managed to reolve it or perhaps knows what the issue might be.

Many thanks in advance.

Simon

Hi Simon,

Having the same issue.
For some reason i can't run it in compatibility mode for IE8, but works fine in the other browsers.
Since nobody is currently developing this project, i think we're screwed!

Solution anybody?

Stephan

I'm seeing this problem too.

The strange thing is that I think this was the error that I used to see under Safari.  But now the Chat works fine with Safari!

I'll try to see if I can figure out what's going on sometime in the next few weeks, but no guarantees - this will be my first forray into DNN module development!

What other chat modules do folks recommend?  I've tried a few, and each has its drawbacks; this basic chat module is actually one of the best, despite the problems.

The problem seems to be that the chat message updates received from the server have a prefix code on them that wasn't there before; I'm not sure if this is by design or a bug.  The XML parsers used on other browsers happily ignore this prefix, but MSXML (Internet Explorer's XML parser) doesn't like it. So I tweaked the JavaScript for the Chat module to discard this prefix if present.

To apply this workaround, you need to edit DesktopModules\Chat\DnnChat.js:

  • Go to line 59. The preceeding lines should be:
    function receiveChatMessage(result, context)
    {
        try
        {

  • Paste the following:
            // WORKAROUND: MSXML is choking on a lead character that we're getting.
            // So strip off anything before the opening '<'
            while ((result.length > 0) && !(result.charAt(0) == '<')) {
                result = result.slice(1);
            }

I've tested this with IE8 (current), Safari (current), Firefox (recent), and Google Chrome (current).

Hope this helps!
